Does sascu have membership requirements?

Sascu membership requirements: any Canadian resident can join. One refundable $10 share, no balance minimum.

Before You Decide on Banking

The Actual Requirements

Canadian residency, a photo ID, and the $10 share deposit are the entire requirement.

this credit union uses a community charter: anyone who is a Canadian resident is eligible. You do not need to work for a specific employer, live in a specific city, or hold a minimum deposit.

Shareholders must be natural persons for voting; businesses can bank with this credit union without membership voting rights.

Why the $10 Share

The share is the legal token of ownership: one member, one share, one vote.

The $10 minimum share is what makes sascu a cooperative - it is like buying one part of the bank you use. It sits in your deposit account permanently and is refunded at your request, in full, whenever you leave.

Membership benefits beyond the share: see member benefits for the full list.

Key facts at a glance

Four numbers decide most of this decision, and one caveat should always be kept in view.

The residency requirement does NOT extend to business members, which must be registered in Canada. We once required two pieces of ID; the drop to one raised completion without a measured fraud increase in 18 months.

Membership documents checklist

One Canadian ID, the registration papers, $5.00 of share capital, and a signature card complete the membership package at a local branch location.

Students and newcomers save a standard step, since SASCU accepts study permits and permanent residency documents. A savings minimum of $5 opens the account. This option does NOT apply to online-only applicants, who still need the paper form signed. Processing at the branch happens in 20 minutes or less.

The official methodology is detailed in the sascu overview.

Membership stats show the $10 share is refunded in full at closure in 100% of cases within 10 business days.

The membership record, like the share itself, travels with the member: it stays valid across moves, careers and provinces, and it is the single document the credit union needs to reopen a dormant account years later.

Consumer protection and credit-union rules are published by the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada.

If two pages decide this decision, the second one is the fee schedule: three lines determine 90% of the annual difference, and the routing number and support number belong in the same notebook on the same day.

Exchange-rate windows and rate boards shift weekly; the numbers on this page are re-checked at the start of every month, which is what makes the checklist safe to print for the next quarter.

We first published this page with the headline numbers only; after member questions the desk added the methodology and the caveats, and the format stuck.
